In 2019, he and his wife founded Jasmine Beauty School—one of the first bilingual cosmetology schools in San Diego. Guided by the principle “skill must go hand in hand with ethics,” the school has trained over 2,000 students, helping them build stable careers. His dedication to education and empowerment has made a lasting impact, uplifting both the Vietnamese and local communities through professional development and opportunity in the beauty industry.

Năm 2019, ông Kevin Hùng La thành lập Jasmine Beauty School, một trong những trường thẩm mỹ song ngữ đầu tiên tại San Diego. Với phương châm “nghề đi đôi với đạo đức,” Jasmine Beauty School đào tạo hơn 2,000 học viên, giúp họ xây dựng sự nghiệp ổn định và đóng góp tích cực cho ngành làm đẹp của cộng đồng người Việt và người bản xứ tại địa phương.
Khi mới 10 tuổi, cậu bé Hùng La cùng gia đình rời Việt Nam đến Hoa Kỳ vào năm 1989, định cư tại thành phố Monterey Park. Một năm sau, gia đình ông chuyển đến một khu dân cư thu nhập thấp ở San Diego – nơi mà họ có thể đủ khả năng chi trả, nhưng cũng là bước đầu tiên trên con đường xây dựng một tương lai tốt đẹp hơn.
Lớn lên trong hoàn cảnh khó khăn, chàng thanh niên đối mặt với nhiều thử thách, từ rào cản ngôn ngữ khiến chàng trai trở thành mục tiêu bị trêu chọc và bắt nạt, cho đến áp lực phải phụ giúp gia đình về tài chính. Thay vì để những khó khăn đó định hình bản thân, ông chọn cách đối diện và vượt qua, xem mỗi thử thách là cơ hội để trở nên mạnh mẽ và kiên cường hơn.
Trong những năm trung học, ông vừa học vừa làm thêm để phụ giúp cha mẹ. Lên đại học, ông cùng lúc làm hai công việc để tiếp tục hỗ trợ tài chính cho gia đình. Những trải nghiệm này rèn luyện cho ông tính kỷ luật, trách nhiệm và ý chí vươn lên.
Ông tốt nghiệp trung học với điểm trung bình GPA trên 4.0, thuộc nhóm học sinh giỏi nhất lớp – thành tích không chỉ khiến bản thân tự hào mà còn là niềm hãnh diện của cả gia đình.
Chàng sinh viên được nhận vào nhiều trường đại học, nhưng chọn theo học đại học University of California, San Diego (UCSD) để ở gần cha mẹ và theo đuổi song song hai ngành: Hóa Dược và Sinh Lý Động Vật – nền tảng giúp ông chuẩn bị bước vào trường y ở Pennsylvania.
Thế nhưng sau hai năm học y khoa, ông bị bệnh, buộc phải rút lui để tập trung chữa bệnh. Giai đoạn đó để lại nỗi đau sâu sắc, nhưng cũng là bước ngoặt để ông định hướng lại cuộc đời.
Trong hơn một thập niên tiếp theo, ông Hùng thử sức với nhiều nghề nghiệp khác nhau như làm việc trong ngành di trú, môi giới địa ốc và khai thuế. Dù đạt được những thành công, ông vẫn cảm thấy thiếu mục tiêu – một điều gì đó mang tính bền vững và có ý nghĩa lâu dài cho cộng đồng.
Vào khoảng năm 2015–2016, vợ chồng ông Hùng nhận thấy một xu hướng đáng lo ngại rằng nhiều trường thẩm mỹ do người gốc Á điều hành đang dần đóng cửa, khiến cơ hội nghề nghiệp trong ngành làm đẹp trở nên hạn chế, đặc biệt với người Việt mới nhập cư.
Rào cản ngôn ngữ cũng khiến nhiều người gặp khó khăn khi tìm trường học có giảng dạy bằng tiếng Việt.
Từ đó, một ý tưởng nảy mầm là thành lập một trường thẩm mỹ dành cho người Mỹ gốc Việt, vừa cung cấp cơ hội nghề nghiệp, vừa giúp người học tự tin vượt qua trở ngại ngôn ngữ. Với quyết tâm ấy, ông bắt tay vào một hành trình không hề dễ dàng.
Việc xây dựng trường học đòi hỏi nhiều nỗ lực như cải tạo cơ sở vật chất, xin giấy phép, đến vượt qua hàng loạt cuộc thanh tra của thành phố và hội đồng ngành thẩm mỹ.
Ông cùng các thành viên còn xây dựng chương trình giảng dạy song ngữ Anh-Việt và tuyển dụng những giảng viên có chuyên môn và có thể giảng dạy bằng cả hai ngôn ngữ.
Sau bao cố gắng, trường Jasmine Beauty School chính thức khai trương vào ngày 5 Tháng Ba, 2019, trở thành trường song ngữ duy nhất thời điểm bấy giờ.
Tên trường được đặt theo tên “con gái ruột” của vợ chồng ông.
Nhưng khó khăn vẫn chưa dừng lại. Khi đại dịch COVID-19 bùng phát năm 2020, trường phải đóng cửa gần sáu tháng.
Dù vậy, ông không nản chí mà dành hàng giờ để tìm phương án giảng dạy mới. Nhờ vậy, ngôi trường này trở thành trường hậu trung học đầu tiên tại San Diego được chấp thuận cho dạy học kết hợp trực tiếp và trực tuyến.
Ông cùng cộng sự nỗ lực điều chỉnh chương trình học, áp dụng quy trình an toàn, chia nhỏ lớp học để bảo đảm giãn cách theo hướng dẫn y tế. Nhờ sự thích nghi nhanh chóng, nhiều học viên đã hoàn thành chương trình học, vượt qua kỳ thi hội đồng tiểu bang và bắt đầu sự nghiệp trong ngành làm đẹp.
“Chúng tôi dạy học cho các sắc dân khác nữa. Hiện trường có khoảng 80% là học viên Mỹ và Hispanic, và khoảng 20% là Việt Nam,” ông Hùng cho biết.
Từ lúc thành lập, Jasmine Beauty School đào tạo cho hơn 2,000 học viên với phương châm “nghề đi đôi với đạo đức.”
“Chúng tôi hãnh diện khi học viên tốt nghiệp, vào từng bước tạo được chỗ đứng trong nghề,” ông Hùng tâm sự.
Nhìn lại hành trình từ một đứa trẻ nhập cư bị bắt nạt ở trường, đến người sáng lập một ngôi trường giúp thay đổi cuộc đời cho biết bao học viên, ông Hùng La tin rằng mỗi khó khăn đều là một bước đệm nếu ta không bỏ cuộc.
“Những năm tháng tuổi trẻ dạy tôi giá trị của lao động, sự kiên trì và lòng tận tụy,” ông chia sẻ. “Tôi biết ơn những thử thách và thành tựu đã định hình nên con người tôi hôm nay. Mỗi bước đi đều là minh chứng cho nghị lực của gia đình tôi, và sức mạnh của quyết tâm vượt qua mọi nghịch cảnh.”

In 2019, Kevin Hùng La founded Jasmine Beauty School—one of the first bilingual Vietnamese-English cosmetology schools in San Diego. Guided by the principle “skill with integrity,” the school has since trained more than 2,000 students, empowering graduates to build sustainable careers in the beauty industry while serving both the Vietnamese community and the broader public with pride and professionalism.
Born in Vietnam and raised in the United States, Kevin Hùng La’s story is one of persistence, reinvention, and service. He immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10 in 1989, initially settling in Monterey Park before his family relocated to an affordable neighborhood in San Diego. Like many refugee families, they arrived with little but held onto big dreams.
Growing up, Hùng faced no shortage of adversity: —language barriers, bullying, and financial hardship among them. But instead of giving in, he used these obstacles as fuel for growth.
As a teenager, he juggled school and part-time jobs to help his parents. In college, he worked two jobs while pursuing higher education—an experience that shaped his discipline, sense of duty, and drive to succeed.
He graduated high school with a GPA above 4.0, ranking among the top in his class—a proud achievement for himself and his family.
Offered admission to multiple universities, Hùng chose to stay close to his parents, enrolling at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). There, he pursued dual majors in Biochemistry and Animal Physiology as preparation for medical school in Pennsylvania.
But midway through medical school, Hùng fell seriously ill and was forced to step away from his studies to focus on recovery. Though it was a painful detour, it became a pivotal moment of reflection—one that ultimately redirected the course of his life.
But life took an unexpected turn. After two years of medical training, Kevin faced a serious illness that forced him to withdraw and focus on recovery. Though heartbreaking at the time, the experience marked a profound turning point—leading him to reconsider his path and search for a calling rooted in both personal passion and service to others.
Over the next decade, Hùng explored a variety of professions—from immigration consulting to real estate and tax services. Despite success, something was missing. He longed for work that made a deeper, lasting impact on his community.
That opportunity revealed itself around 2015, when he and his wife noticed a concerning trend: many Asian-owned beauty schools in San Diego were closing, narrowing vocational pathways for immigrants—especially Vietnamese speakers—hoping to enter the beauty industry. The lack of Vietnamese-language instruction left many feeling discouraged or excluded.
Determined to change that, the couple set out to build a school of their own. It would be a place where language was no longer a barrier, where cultural understanding was central, and where students could thrive with confidence.
Opening a school, however, was no small feat. It required renovations, multiple permits, rigorous inspections, curriculum development, and recruiting instructors fluent in both English and Vietnamese.
But with relentless dedication, Jasmine Beauty School officially opened its doors on March 5, 2019, becoming the first bilingual beauty school of its kind in San Diego. The school’s name is a tribute to the couple’s daughter, Jasmine—a symbol of the family’s commitment to building a better future, not just for themselves but for others.
Just one year after opening, Jasmine Beauty School faced another trial: the outbreak of COVID-19. Like many institutions, the school was forced to shut down for nearly six months. Instead of giving up, Hùng spent countless hours redesigning the educational model. His school became one of the first postsecondary institutions in San Diego to receive approval for hybrid instruction, combining in-person and online learning.
They adapted safety protocols, reduced class sizes, and created a new structure that allowed students to continue—and complete—their training. Many graduates went on to pass state board exams and launch careers in the beauty industry, even in the midst of a crisis.
“We serve people from all backgrounds,” Kevin shares. “Today, about 80% of our students are Hispanic and American, and 20% are Vietnamese. The goal is the same: to equip them with skills, confidence, and ethics to succeed.”
Since its founding, Jasmine Beauty School has helped more than 2,000 students enter the workforce, many of them launching successful careers and even opening businesses of their own. The school’s mission is grounded not only in professional training, but in empowerment—especially for those rebuilding their lives or starting anew in a foreign land.
“We’re proud to watch our graduates find their place in this industry,” Kevin says. “Many come to us unsure of their future. They leave with skills, dignity, and direction.”
For Kevin Hùng La, it’s more than a business—it’s a second chance, a community platform, and a deeply personal mission to uplift others through education, compassion, and opportunity.
Reflecting on his journey—from a young refugee got bullied in school to the founder of a school that has changed lives—Kevin Hùng La believes every obstacle is a steppingstone, if we choose to rise above it.
“Those early years taught me resilience, hard work, and empathy,” he reflects. “I’m grateful for the setbacks because they gave me perspective. Every success I have today is built on the sacrifices of my family and the strength we gained from adversity.”
Today, Jasmine Beauty School continues to grow as a center of learning, healing, and cultural inclusion—rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, no matter where they start.
And at the heart of it all is a man who turned struggle into strength, and whose story continues to inspire the next generation of dreamers, doers, and changemakers.
