Năm 2011, cô tiếp quản Viet Pharmacy & Medical Supplies, trên con đường El Cajon Blvd sầm uất với nhiều cơ sở kinh doanh của người Việt. Trong đại dịch COVID-19, Viet Pharmacy phát hàng ngàn liều vaccine và khẩu trang miễn phí, góp phần không nhỏ vào việc bảo vệ sức khỏe cộng đồng. Bận rộn với công việc kiểm thuốc và quản lý tiệm, nhưng Dược Sĩ Phương Dung luôn hỗ trợ bệnh nhân mọi lúc mọi nơi như sẵn sàng thông dịch tại chỗ, gọi điện giải thích với bảo hiểm, hướng dẫn thủ tục Medi-Cal, giúp người cao tuổi điền đơn xin hỗ trợ tiền gas, điện, nước. Với cô, chăm sóc sức khỏe không chỉ dừng lại ở toa thuốc, mà là sự lắng nghe, thấu hiểu và đồng hành cùng người bệnh.
Dr. Dung arrived in the U.S. in 1995 through the HO program at age 16. In 2011, she took over Viet Pharmacy & Medical Supplies on El Cajon Blvd, a cornerstone of the Vietnamese business community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her pharmacy distributed thousands of free vaccines and masks, playing a vital role in protecting public health. As a pharmacist and business owner, she goes far beyond her professional duties—offering interpretation services, helping with insurance, Medi-Cal, and utility assistance. To Dr. Dung, healthcare is not just about prescriptions, but about compassion, advocacy, and walking with her patients every step of the way. Viet Pharmacy & Medical Supplies nằm trên đại lộ El Cajon Blvd, một trong những con đường sôi động bậc nhất của cộng đồng người Việt tại San Diego.
Từ khi cô chính thức tiếp nhận vào năm 2011, trải qua hơn một thập niên điều hành, cô dược sĩ trẻ biến nơi đây thành mái nhà sức khỏe cho hàng ngàn bệnh nhân, trong đó phần lớn là người Việt, và khoảng 20% các sắc dân khác như Lào, Cambodia, Hispanic...
Là con của một quân nhân Quân Lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, năm 1995, khi mới 16 tuổi, cô học sinh Phương Dung cùng gia đình sang Mỹ định cư theo diện HO.
Hành trình định cư không dễ dàng, nhưng với tinh thần vượt khó, cô lần lượt tốt nghiệp đại học cộng đồng, sau đó học tại University of California, Irvine, rồi hoàn tất chương trình Dược tại Nevada Pharmacy School.
Dù từng sống ở nhiều nơi, Dược Sĩ Phương Dung vẫn chọn gắn bó lâu dài với San Diego. “Tôi thích nơi này vì cộng đồng rất gần gũi, ai cũng biết nhau, ai cũng sẵn sàng giúp đỡ nhau,” cô chia sẻ.
Chính sự gần gũi ấy đã tạo động lực để cô dồn tâm huyết vào phục vụ cộng đồng.
Ngoài việc kiểm tra đơn thuốc và điều hành cơ sở, cô dược sĩ trẻ luôn túc trực giúp bệnh nhân từ thông dịch, gọi điện nói chuyện với bảo hiểm, giải thích quyền lợi Medi-Cal, cho đến giúp điền đơn xin hỗ trợ tiền gas, điện, nước.
Với cô, việc chăm sóc sức khỏe không chỉ nằm ở đơn thuốc mà còn là sự đồng hành – đặc biệt với những bệnh nhân lớn tuổi, người không rành tiếng Anh, hoặc những người vừa mới đặt chân đến nước Mỹ.
“Có cô chú thường mang bánh, thức ăn, trái cây vào tặng cả tiệm thuốc, tôi thấy mình may mắn vì được sống và làm việc trong một cộng đồng chan hòa tình nghĩa như vậy,” cô cười nói
Trong giai đoạn cam go của đại dịch COVID-19, Viet Pharmacy trở thành một trong những nơi đầu tiên phát vaccine và khẩu trang miễn phí.
Viet Pharmacy không đóng cửa ngày nào đợt COVID-19 để phục vụ đồng hương trong thời gian khó khăn và thiếu thốn trăm bề, góp phần không nhỏ vào việc bảo vệ sức khỏe cộng đồng.
Dù bận rộn với công việc là một dược sĩ, cô Phương Dung còn là người luôn tích cực tham gia các hoạt động cộng đồng. Cô âm thầm đóng góp tài chính cho các chương trình văn hóa, nghệ thuật của hội Little Saigon San Diego, từ đại nhạc hội đến những công trình ghi dấu hành trình người tị nạn.
Cô còn tham gia vận động cho các dự án làm đẹp thành phố và phát triển khu vực Little Saigon nhằm bảo tồn di sản của người Việt.
“Tôi biết ơn nước Mỹ vì đã cho gia đình tôi một khởi đầu mới. Nếu còn ở Việt Nam, chưa chắc gì bố mẹ có điều kiện cho tôi đi học đến nơi đến chốn. Và tôi cũng biết ơn cộng đồng San Diego, chính cư dân ở đây đã giúp Viet Pharmacy tồn tại và phát triển,” cô chia sẻ.

In a vibrant corner of Little Saigon San Diego, Viet Pharmacy & Medical Supplies stands as more than a business—it is a cornerstone of care, compassion, and community. Established in the 1980s, this modest pharmacy has long been a trusted resource for the area’s Vietnamese American population. But since 2011, under the leadership of pharmacist Phương Dung, it has transformed into something even more vital: a sanctuary where healthcare is delivered with empathy, cultural understanding, and deep personal commitment.
Nestled along El Cajon Boulevard, one of San Diego’s busiest cultural corridors, Viet Pharmacy serves a broad and diverse clientele—not only Vietnamese patients, but also individuals from Laotian, Cambodian, and Hispanic communities. The pharmacy has become a living reflection of the city’s rich multicultural spirit.
Phương Dung’s journey to this role began thousands of miles away. In 1995, at age 16, she arrived in the United States with her family under the Humanitarian Operation (HO) program for former South Vietnamese military personnel. Her father had served in the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces and, like many, endured time in a re-education camp following the fall of Saigon.
Resettling in a new country was not easy. But through perseverance, Dung completed community college, earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Irvine, and went on to obtain her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Nevada Pharmacy School. Despite living in several states, she chose to make San Diego her permanent home.
“I love this city because it feels like a family,” she shares. “People know each other. They care for one another. That’s what inspired me to give my best—to serve not just as a pharmacist, but as a neighbor.”
And serve she does. At Viet Pharmacy, Phương Dung’s role extends far beyond filling prescriptions. She helps elderly customers navigate insurance plans, translates complex documents, explains Medi-Cal benefits, and even assists with utility assistance applications for gas, electricity, and water.
“To me, healthcare isn’t just about medication,” she says. “It’s about being there—especially for seniors, new immigrants, and those who struggle with language barriers.”
Her quiet compassion has left a deep impression. Customers often show up with home-cooked meals, fruit, or traditional Vietnamese treats—not just in thanks for medical support, but in gratitude for the warmth she brings to their lives.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a community that’s so warm and generous,” she says with a smile.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when fear and uncertainty were at their peak, Viet Pharmacy became a lifeline. It was among the first in the area to distribute free vaccines and masks. While other businesses closed, Phương Dung and her team stayed open every single day, helping patients in a time of profound need.
Beyond her work in healthcare, Phương Dung remains an active supporter of cultural preservation and civic development. She has quietly contributed to numerous community programs, including festivals and exhibitions hosted by Little Saigon San Diego, honoring the Vietnamese refugee journey and supporting the next generation’s connection to their heritage. She also advocates for beautification and urban development efforts to strengthen the identity and pride of the local Vietnamese community.
“I’m deeply grateful to this country for giving my family a second chance,” she reflects. “If we had stayed in Vietnam, I might never have had the opportunity to pursue an education or serve in this way. And I’m equally thankful to the San Diego community for supporting Viet Pharmacy all these years.”
In a world where healthcare can often feel impersonal, Phương Dung has redefined what it means to care. Her leadership—rooted in humility, gratitude, and human connection—reminds us that healing begins not with medicine alone, but with presence, patience, and genuine empathy.
With more than a decade of service behind her and a community that continues to stand with her, Pharmacist Phương Dung’s story is one of quiet strength and heart-led purpose—a testament to how one individual, when guided by compassion, can transform a pharmacy into a home of healing for an entire community.
